Producing Products

Production the multistep process of making parts and assembling them into products

Component each individual part of a product

Assemblies assembled components

subassembly: an assembly used as a component in another product

final assembly: the point at which all the parts are combined to form the product

Production Control controlling what is made and when

work in process: all material that is being worked on

shop floor control: keeps track of work that has been done

inventory: quantity of items on hand

Inventory Control raw materials purchased parts supplies finished goods

raw material: any material before it enters processing

purchased parts: ready-made parts that the company buys

supplies: items needed to keep the plant running smoothly

finished goods: products that are completed, but not yet sold

Good inventory records are important.

Quality Assurance making sure the product is produced according to plans and meets all specifications

quality standard: the level of quality set in advance
