Investigation 1 Part 1 Day 1

Focus Question Like learning targets, we will have a focus question for each lesson part. Write the focus question at the top of a new page then make the following t-chart: Fill in the first part of the table now & be ready to share Focus Question: What is needed to light a bulb My thoughts and ideas before the lesson My thoughts and ideas after the lesson Think About: What do we need energy for? What does energy do?

Introduce the Flashlight Cold call a student to turn on the flashlight What do you think we can do to get the flashlight to work? Bring out & have student install batteries What did you observe when the flashlight worked Produced light Energy can be stored until the energy is needed. Stored energy is energy ready to be used. So, where did the flashlight get the energy to produce the light?

Your Challenge Your challenge is going to be to find out how to get energy from this battery source to a lightbulb to get the bulb to light up. But first to help you, think about this…

Energy Distribute note sheet, glue in notebook & fill in blanks Energy is required to make things happen and is present in many places Energy can be stored in a D-Cell, which most people call a battery A D-cell is an energy source. An energy source is a place where energy is available to be used. The D-cell is a source of energy that makes flashlights, radios, and other electronics work. A D-cell is a safe energy source for us to experiment with, unlike a wall socket.

What is Needed to Light a Bulb? You will be investigating this today! You will be working with a group of 4 and will have: 2 Bulbs 2 D-cells 4 Wires You will be working in groups of four but the group of four should really be two sets of partners working closely together and sharing their ideas. Once in group, designate the “material getter“ Material Getter, get the accurate amount of materials Remember, you goal is to answer the focus question by using your materials to get your bulb to LIGHT UP!

Review Success Once everyone has succeeded put materials away and sit in a circle on the carpet Discuss as a class & model: To get the light to shine, where did you connect the wires to the D-cell? One wire on each end of the cell Where did you connect the wires to the lightbulb? One wire touches the bump at the base of the metal part. The other wire connects to the side of the metal case of the bulb What happens when you touch the wire to the glass part of the bulb? Nothing!
