Historians work like detectives. They use all kinds of evidence to try to piece together a picture of what different cultures were like. Sometimes we have lots of evidence and sometimes we have very little to work with. With Ghana we really only have written primary sources to work with.

I am going to give you 3 primary source documents and you have to tell me what they are about.

What kind of Evidence can we find in the sources? Geographical evidence? Evidence about thier Religion? How Smart they were (Achievements)? Political evidence? Economics? Social Structure?

Try this one first. “On every donkey load of salt when it is brought into the country, their king levies (taxes) one golden dinar (coin) and two golden dinars when it is sent out.”

What is it about? Underline 2 or 3 different key phrases that defends your answer.

Now turn that into a short paragraph with a topic sentence that uses one of these words: Geography, Economy or Political. Use everything you know about the gold and salt trade to make it make sense. Be sure to use 2 key words from the quote.

What is this primary source talking about? “ The city of Ghana consists of 2 towns situated on a plain. One of these towns which inhabited by Muslims, is large and possesses 12 mosques in which they assemble for Friday prayer. There are salaried Imams (religious leaders) and muezzins (Men who call Muslims to prayer, as well as jurists (legal scholars) as well as scholars.”

What kind of Evidence can we find in this source? Geographical evidence? Evidence about their Religion? How Smart they were (Achievements)? Political evidence? Economics? Social Structure?

Underline 2 or 3 different keywords that defends your answer.

Now turn that into a paragraph with a topic sentence that uses the words: Religion, Economy or Political. Use everything you know about how Islam moved down into West Africa to make your paragraph make sense.

A harder one. “The audience (The meeting of the king) is announced by the beating of a drum which is called a duba made from a hollow log. When the people who profess (believe) the same religion of the king approach him, they fall on their knees and sprinkle dust on their head, for this is their way of greeting him. As for the Muslims, they greet him by clapping their hands.”

What kind of Evidence can we find in this source? This could be about politics or about religion. You choose which one you want to write about.

Underline 2 or different key ideas that defends your answer.

Now turn that into a paragraph with a topic sentence that uses the words: Religion or political. Use everything that you know about the movement of trade or religion into West Africa to help your paragraph make sense.
