Year 3 Curriculum Evening 15 th September 2015

This year! In Year 3: Miss Sands and Miss Bagley. This year we will be exploring three topics. Autumn term- Dinosaurs. Spring term- How to train your Dragon. Summer term- Around the World in 80 days.

Life in Year 3 Please make sure your child has a water bottle with them every day that is named. It becomes very time consuming if they are regularly going to the sink for a cup of water. Please make sure that their name is in everything – including PE kits. Your child is responsible for their things.

Home time I am still learning everybody’s faces so please give me a wave when collecting your child. If someone else is collecting your child at hometime, please let me know through the partnership diary or leave a message with the office.

Behaviour Stars of the Week Star of the Day Dojos Comments in partnership book Head of School awards

Homework Homework goes home on a Monday afternoon every 2 weeks in their homework books. Homework: Spellings One piece of English homework One piece of Maths Reading at home (Reading challenge) Please indicate on the sticker the level of support given.

Spellings Spellings go home on a Monday in children’s spelling books. 10 spellings following a spelling pattern. Spelling tests are on Mondays.

Mental maths test Children will have a mental maths test every Friday. I will try to make it as stress free as possible. Helping your child with times tables is great for helping them with their mental maths- Lots of great websites for times tables practice on the internet.

PE Kit PE days for this term are on Thursday and Friday. Please ensure all items are labelled. No earrings are allowed during PE lessons. For the Winter, pupils will need joggers in their PE bag for the colder weather. Also an extra pair of socks for the girls who wear tights. Please include a plastic bag in their PE kit for muddy shoes. Please only give your child laces if they can do them themselves.

Communication with Teacher I will be available on the school playground after school. Any other messages can be written in the partnership book. You can also make an appointment with the school office to see me.

Partnership books Write down any questions, concerns or comments in the partnership book. I encourage you to look at these regularly as Miss Bagley and I will be writing down anything we feel you may need to know in these books. (e.g. if you child has exceeded expectations or may need more support)

Reading in Year 3 Guided reading time- Group reading Comprehension questions Skimming and Scanning activities Quiet reading time- Listening to children read 1:1 with an adult. Lesson time- Reading their work aloud to an adult or the class.

Reading at home Your child should be reading at home daily. Don’t restrict them to their school reading book. They can read anything – picture books, chapter books, cereal packets, comics, recipes etc. Little and often – better to have a good 10 mins that a painful half an hour. Encourage expression and fluency – even if this means re-reading the book. Vocabulary – your child needs to know what they are reading. They should be able to use new words in their writing. Your child can read with you or siblings etc.

Reading at home (2) Try to create a love of reading – share in their enjoyment. Ask your child questions about what has been happening and how characters are feeling to ensure they understand the text. What do you think the ending will be? What does this word mean? Can you use it in a sentence? Get the children to make their own sound effects.

Residential trips. Year 3 have the exciting opportunity to go on a two night residential to Hooke Court, Dorset in the summer term. This proved very popular last year!. If you have any questions about the residential trip please speak to Mrs Bourner.

Communication If you ever have any questions or concerns please come and discuss these with me. The partnership between home and school is essential to ensure the best possible outcomes for our children.
