Technology Integration Across the Curriculum Resource Critique Mary Cobb

National Geographic Atlas Explorer  What is it?  Rational: why did I choose it?

Curriculum Connections Where would this be useful?  Oceans 11  Geography 10  Global Geography  African Canadian Studies

Curriculum Connection Oceans 11 Outcomes:  OSM-1 identify oceans and related water areas in the world  OSM-2 analyse the basic structure of the Earth’s waters  FISH-5 explain the dynamic interrelationship between the physical environment, the biological environment, and the health and distribution of a fish stock  MBIO-7 describe features of marine physiography which impact on the biological communities of local ecosystems

Curriculum Connections  ICT Outcomes ICT Outcomes BOC 12.2 (relates to 9.5) demonstrate an ability to assess the application of technology to solve problems, particularly to evaluate significant effects which estimations, program flaws and human error have on any given solution SEHI 12.3 (relates to 9.1 – 9.4) critically analyze the impacts of evolving technologies on themselves, societies, and the environment CT 12.4 (relates to CT 9.3) discover, share and reflect upon their own and others’ cultures, values, and understandings as they are expressed in electronic and other formats

Pros  Maps of all of the Continents and major Oceans (Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Antarctic and Indian)  Often, both geophysical and geopolitical maps are available  Ocean depths and physical features such as ridges, trenches and seamounts are identified  Zoom tool so you can scan broadly or zoom in to get more detail of a particular area  Puzzles and maps of the day are also available

Cons  Elevation and depth data is somewhat limited  Resolution and detail is not as precise as Google Earth  Need to have Adobe Flash Player (which can be downloaded - free)  Would be nice to get a more detailed map of the North Atlantic Note: Canadian Marine Multibeam Bathymetric Data  No lesson plans are available – you would have to design activities yourself

Demonstration  Let’s Check it out! Let’s Check it out!

Curriculum Connection Lesson Plan

Bonus  Earth Pulse! Earth Pulse! This is a great resource I discovered as I was getting to know Atlas Explorer – this resource is full of current data and statistics related to humans and our Earth.

A Look to the Future  Google Oceans? Google Oceans?

Teacher Handout  Quick “get started guide” for youget started guide
