CLASSIFIERS Handshapes that represent people, objects, and descriptions. Note: You cannot use the classifier without naming the object first.
TYPES OF CLASSIFIERS We will look at the types of classifiers
Size and Shape Specifiers (SASS) Describe certain physical characteristics such as size, shape, depth and texture of a noun as well as indicate its location in space Examples- CL:1 Person walking, pencil, sprout, CL: B paper, a book, flat surface, or a pie CL: F – tube, spot, or small round item CL: B- Cup or cylinder shaped items CL: G- Small rectangular items Any others? ASL Science
What can you make? Use a SASS classifier to describe something in the room.
Semantic Classifiers Represent nouns and can indicate the location of that noun and it’s actions. Example- CL: 3- Car moving (any motorized vehicle) CL: X- Person sneaking or slouched/sitting CL: V- Person walking, 2 people walking, Any others?
Semantic Classifiers How could you use semantic classifiers to describe something?
Whole Body Classifiers Using the body to represent a look or action Examples- bird flying a woman walk a man with a 6 pack muscular body a person behaving drunkenly
Whole Body Classifiers How could you use body classifiers in a story? Demonstrate an example.
Body Part Classifiers Describe parts of the body and its action by using designated handshapes and appropriate movements. It enhances the story and gives the reader a clearer picture. Example CL V: Eyes CL F: Eyes CL 1: Legs, Tail CL B: Animal Ears CL X: Eyebrows CL 1+B: Heartbeat
Instrument Classifier Describes how objects are handled or manipulated. The classifier adds specific information to the sign. Example steering a wheel hammering a nail throwing shoe at someone
Instrument Classifiers Demonstrate how you would use an instrument classifier to describe something or the use of something.
Locative Classifiers Indicate the spatial relationship between two or more things. Similar to prepositions in English (in, on, under, behind, above etc) Car to Tree Boy sitting on a tree Person hiding behind rock
Locative Classifiers Use the classifiers “tree” and “cat” to create a mini story (one sentence).
CLASSIFIER SUB CATEGORIES
Plural Classifiers Shows more than one something Row of cars Books on a shelf People standing People sitting
Descriptive Similar to SASSes, but shows movement and space Pick up penny on floor
Element Describes the look and action of the elements. Gas, air, liquid, Fire chimney blowing smoke Waterfall Roaring fire
Activity- Classifier Story Watch the video. Identify a classifier from each of these categories and describes how he uses them. Turn it in for a grade. Size and Shape Specifiers (SASS) Semantic Whole Body Body Part Instrument Locative Plural
