Agenda O Bellwork: Explain at least 2 ways in which people were killed during WWI O End of War O Brief notes (in notebook) O Journal Prompts—your first 5 should be almost complete!!! O We are giving you LOTS of time! We expect that you get the journals DONE!

The End of War O Germany’s allies collapsed in late 1918 O November 1918, Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Empires surrendered to Allied Powers O Germany realized it couldn’t win, and German citizens were suffering from shortages on food and supplies O Armistice—an agreement to end the fighting—began on November 11, 1918 O The fighting stopped, the Great War ended.

Making Peace O January 1919, leaders from 27 countries met in Paris France to discuss a plan for peace O Europe was in ruins and faced social and political troubles O Wilson proposed his Fourteen Points plan including call for free trade and freedom of the seas O The 14 th point was for a League of Nations which would help preserve peace and prevent future wars O Germany would have to pay reparations (repayments) for the damages to Europe in WWI.

Treaty of Versailles O The allies and Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles June 28, 1919 O The United States needed to debate the treaty in the Senate for ratification. O Henry Cabot Lodge disagreed with the treaty and there was a lot of discussion. O In the end the US did not approve it, and never joined the League of Nations.

Pros and Cons of Wilson’s 14 Points Pros Cons O Focused on world peace O Allow for free trade O No secret alliances O Countries would reduce arms (guns) O Countries would work together O U.S. would have to be involved in all world affairs O U.S. should not have to be the worlds policeman O It’s not the U.S. responsibility to keep peace in Europe
