Measuring Fabric Thickness due to Binder, Pressure, and HT T. Holik QXF coil WG meeting Wednesday, March 11, 2015

3 Method of Measurement Want to Determine: Thickness consistently Effect of binder amount Effect of HT How much effluent from HT Effect of Pressure Effect of Pressure Cycling Measure thickness of two plates with and without fabric between 10 cm X 10 cm plates > 1 cm thick Average two alternating corner thicknesses (Corners A & C) Record 5 MPa thickness (11,200 lbf) Each blanket edge should slightly stick out from the plates.

4 Fabric Preparation Want to Determine: Thickness consistently Effect of binder amount Effect of HT How much effluent from HT Effect of Pressure Effect of Pressure Cycling Will Measure 4 Sample Groups Control Fabric (No Binder Used) Used Binder Fabric (11.8 mg/cm 2 ) For QXFS: 47 grams on 135 cm X 19.5 cm sheet) Light Binder Fabric (6 mg/cm 2 ) Heavy Binder Fabric (18 mg/cm 2 ) Will weigh fabric and binder to the nearest 1/100 gram. Before application After Curing After Reaction Control (x2) Light (x2) Used (x2) Heavy (x2) 45 cm 35 cm 2 layers are used for LARP QXF

5 Fabric Preparation Light (x2) Used (x2) Heavy (x2) Image from S. Krave 8/5/2013

6 Fabric Preparation Cut each Sample Group into 12 equal squares (~11 cm X 11 cm) Six squares are actually 12 sheets thick Control (x2) Light (x2) Used (x2) Heavy (x2) 45 cm 35 cm

Measure 6 squares (12 layers) of each samples to the following pressures: 1 MPa, 5 MPa, release 1 MPa, 10 MPa, release 1 MPa, 20 MPa, release 1 MPa, 30 MPa, release 1 MPa 7 Proposed Pre-HT Measurements Fabric (x2) Direct measure on the effect of binder, pressure, and cycling on S-2 Glass pre-HT May see a ‘breakdown’ pressure for cured binder Radial Cable Curing Pressure To a dimension Unknown / Loose Azimuthal Cable Curing pressure: 17 – 27 MPa (LQ data)

HT all samples in an argon atmosphere at 650°C for 48 hours. Segregate the Control, Light, Used, and Heavy samples as much as possible during the HT to minimize cross contamination. Document which samples were previously compressed and which were not. Maintain a low flow of Argon that is consistent with coil HT (50 CFH). Should a nominal pressure be applied to the samples during HT??? Cable expansion could potentially be compressing the interlayer insulation. In practice this isn’t happening. 8 Sample HT

Measure the uncompressed 6 squares (12 layers) of each samples to the following pressures: 1 MPa, 5 MPa, release 1 MPa, 10 MPa, release 1 MPa, 20 MPa, release 1 MPa, 30 MPa, release 1 MPa 9 Proposed Post-HT Measurements Fabric (x2) Will determine the effect of HT, pressure, and cycling on S-2 Glass Hope to determine a ‘breakdown’ pressure for reacted binder

Measure the previously compressed 6 squares (12 layers) of each sample to the following pressures: 1 MPa, 5 MPa, 10 MPa, 20 MPa, 30 MPa, release 1 MPa 10 Optional Post-HT Measurements Will determine if cycling cured blanket has any effect on the reacted blanket thickness.

11 Summary Want to Determine : Thickness consistently – 5 MPa between plates (10 cm X 10 cm) Effect of binder amount – Control, ½, Used, 1.5x Effect of HT – Measure thickness from 1 to 30 MPa How much effluent from HT – Weigh Samples before and after Effect of Pressure Cycling – Measure thickness at 1 MPa between measurements Should an alternate Curing method be explored? Flat? More pressure? No pressure? Should smaller plates be used? Is 1 cm thick enough? Should 5 MPa be recorded rather than 1 MPa between measurements?
