Location The former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R. or Soviet Union) was located in eastern Europe and across northern Asia. With an area of 22,400,000 square kilometers, it was the world’s largest country and covered one sixth of the Earth’s land.

Location It was bordered by Afghanistan, China, Czechoslovakia, Finland, Hungary, Iran, Mongolia, North Korea, Norway, Poland, Romania, and Turkey.

What political boundary change happened? In 1991, the Soviet Union broke into many independent countries. The new countries were Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.

Why did the political boundary change happen? The Soviet Union was a communist country. Starting in the 1980’s, many of the people wanted change. The different republics in the Soviet Union also wanted independence. In 1991, the communist Soviet Union ended and the new countries became democracies.

Why did the political boundary change happen? The political boundary change happened because of a change in government.
