Mission System MissionPuebloRanchoPresidio Many California Indians worked on missions. Pueblo is a s Spanish word for village. Many settlers built ranchos. The Spanish set up presidios to protect the areas occupied. Men farmed and took care of animals. People living in the pueblos grew food for the soldiers. Ranchos were often used to raise large numbers of life stock. A presidio is a Spanish word for fort. The women cooked, sewed gardened, and made candles. Pueblo workers received money, land, and animals in return for supplying the presidio with food and water. Over time ranchos replaced missions as the center of the areas. The Spanish began to occupy a areas of California in the late 1600`s. The older people fished and made arrows. The Spanish government also set up pueblos on farmland near the Presidios. Ranchos are large areas of lands where crops are grown. Each presidio was a home for the soldiers. Missions were set up for religious purposes. Pueblos are for workers and soldiers. Ranchos are lands. Presidios also became areas for trading.
