General news… Monthly meeting, CLIC physics and detector study, 24/9/2012 Lucie Linssen L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/2012 1

Outline L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/ Links to our recent documents CLIC energy staging in CDR Volume 3 CLIC strategy and objectives (from CDR Volume 3) Re-baselining of CLIC energy stages New activities in CLIC physics and detector study Status of LCD Notes Status future LC and CLIC physics/detector organisation

Links to our recent documents… CLIC CDR (#3), The CLIC Programme: towards a staged e + e - Linear Collider exploring the Terascale, ANL-HEP-TR-12-51, CERN , KEK Report , MPP (the order for printed copies was placed on 13/9; be patient) CLIC e + e - Linear Collider Studies, CLIC input to the update process of the European Strategy for Particle Physics: arXiv: arXiv: The Physics Case for an e + e - Linear Collider, LC input to the update process of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, ILC ESD-2012/4, CLIC-Note- 949 L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/2012 3

CLIC energy staging L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/ Advice: The motivation and implementation of energy staging (construction/operation) is quite new for CLIC => => read CDR #3, or CLIC input to the European strategy Making optimal use of the capacities (luminosity) of CLIC, this is best studied with a collider built in a few successive energy stages. At each energy stage, the centre-of-mass energy can be tuned down by a factor ~3 with limited luminosity loss (e.g. for threshold scans). The optimal choice of the actual energy stages will depend on the physics scenario, will be driven by 8 TeV + 14 TeV LHC results. The scenarios in CDR #3 are therefore “just examples”, worked out illustrations.

CLIC layout at 3 TeV L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/2012 5

CLIC layout at 500 GeV L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/ (scenario A)

Staged approach, scenario A+B L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/ A B 500 GeV 1.4 TeV 3 TeV 500 GeV 1.5 TeV 3 TeV

Parameters, scenario A L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/2012 8

Parameters, scenario B L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/2012 9

Integrated luminosity L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/ Based on 200 days/year at 50% efficiency (accelerator + data taking combined) Target figures: >600 fb -1 at first stage, 1.5 ab -1 at second stage, 2 ab -1 at third stage

Power L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/ Various options for improvement have been identified

CLIC strategy and objectives L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/

more remarks on energy staging… L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/ For the CDR, the CLIC study always focused on the 3 TeV machine Design was optimised for 3 TeV The ultimate 3 TeV machine imposes constraints on the lower energy stages Once the desired energy stages are known => design can be optimised (with impact on e.g. cost) Re-baselining CLIC in the next project phase ( ): First stage likely to be 375 GeV (Higgs/top) With drive beam Klystron-based Later stages => needs more physics input from LHC Note: a klystron-based initial stage ~375 GeV could be more cost-effective. Technology readiness of klystron option => to be checked An initial stage at with klystrons at ~375 GeV could bring the CLIC cm energy with 1 drive beam to 1875 GeV.

“new” activities L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/ While the CDR Vol.3 benchmark studies are coming to an end: A new round of benchmark studies being initiated through the analysis WG. Future LC organisation L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/ From the minutes of the ILCSC meeting in Melbourne: “… The Associate Director for Physics and Detectors would look after the detector collaborations, and proposals for this position could come from the community, although the final choice would be by management. ILCSC felt that Evans should work with the detector community to achieve a consensus on the Associate Director candidate and on his/her exact role… “ Feedback we received from Lyn Evans: Lyn will consult with the community to nominate a consensus candidate to the RD position (by the time of LCWS12?). The appointed RD with then initiate the process to define a suitable organisational structure.

L. Linssen, CLIC physics and detector, Monthly 24/9/ As the CDR studies are now finished… It’s a good time to give seminars about CLIC For this, we need YOU !
