Overview The Obesity Epidemic Current State of the American Diet The Greatest of Fat, Salt and Sugar Deeper Look at Refined & Unrefined Foods Q & A

Obesity Epidemic 35% of Americans Obese (1 of 3) 69% of Americans Overweight or Obese (2 of 3)

Obesity Epidemic

State of the American Diet

“Now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the GREATEST of these is CHARITY.” I Cor 13:13

Sugar is the Greatest “Now abideth FAT, SALT, SUGAR, these three; but the GREATEST of these is SUGAR.” - Kipp

Understanding Your Metabolism Your Metabolism is your body’s fire (furnace) It is responsible for converting fuel (food) in to energy, muscles and reserves (fat). + = ENERGY FAT MUSCLE

Eating More than You Need When you over eat, or eat more than you need for energy, your metabolism stores the excess food as fat. + = ENERGY FAT MUSCLE

How to Shed Fat – What to Eat + = High Fat + High Sugar = Fat Storage! OBESITY even in small quantities

How to Shed Fat – What to Eat + = Lean Protein + Veggies = Fat Burning!

Deeper Look At Sugar REFINED = with impurities or unwanted elements having been removed by processing. THIS IS BAD. UNREFINED = Not processed to remove impurities or unwanted elements. Natural found in nature. Carbohydrate foods that rich and natural. THIS IS GOOD.

Where Are Refined Foods? Where do you find refined sugar foods? What are the signs of food that has been refined?

Signs of the Devil, I mean Refined Foods Loaded with white, bleached or enriched flour most often from wheat, corn or rice. Loaded with and refined sugars, such as high-fructose corn syrup, most breakfast cereals are not a good way to start the day.

Signs of Refined Foods Processed Foods are altered and/or made by man.

Signs of UNREFINED Food Foods sweetened with: honey, agave nectar, stevia brown rice syrup maple sugar, coconut sugar, date sugar, cane juice, fruit or molasses

Signs of UNREFINED Food

What’s the Big Deal? Does it matter all that much to eat unrefined vs. refined? Completely cutting out refined sugar is not an easy task, but it's something that you need to do in order to have OPTIMAL HEALTH.

Effects of Refined Food/Sugar Refined food causes free radicals to develop (acid), Refined foods are linked to diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, gout etc.. Refined sugar is a poison. Why? Refined sugar has been depleted of its life forces, vitamins and minerals. This is important to understand.

Effects of Refined Food/Sugar When sugar is refined it is left as pure, refined carbohydrates. The body cannot utilize this refined carbohydrate unless proteins, vitamins and minerals are present. To overcome this, refined sugar strips the body of precious vitamins and minerals through the demand for digestion.

Effects of Refined Food/Sugar To digest sugar, calcium is removed from the bone and teeth (we wonder about cavities). The liver is expanded abnormally to store the excess sugar. When the liver overflows it release fat cells that are stored all over the body (belly, butt, legs, etc.)

Effects of Refined Food/Sugar

What is a Free Radical?

What is a Free Radical?

There is Hope!

Effects of UNREFINED Foods Unrefined food helps to DESTROY free radicals (alkaline) Unrefined sugar has the vitamins and minerals need that the body needs to stabilizes free radical cells

Effects of UNREFINED Foods Eating fresh, organically grown vegetables and fruits, whole grains and legumes -- results in a lower risk of many types of cancers and chronic diseases, and promotes healthy aging and higher energy levels.

Effects of UNREFINED Foods Time and again, epidemiological studies--a type of study in which the diet consumed by individuals is compared to their development of disease over a period of years or decades--show that people who consume these foods have a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), arthritis, and cancer than people whose diets emphasize processed, refined un-whole foods.

Effects of UNREFINED Foods Specifically, the consumption of high amounts of fruits and vegetables is associated with lower risks of CVD, asthma, chronic bronchitis, and arthritis; and, the consumption of whole grains and soy foods offers protection against CVD and cancer.

Effects of UNREFINED Foods Unrefined foods contain antioxidants! Antioxidants can protect us from the damage these free radical molecules produce in our cells. Different antioxidants provide protection to different parts of our bodies and cells, and antioxidants work together as a team.

Effects of UNREFINED Foods We need more than just a high amount of a single antioxidant, like vitamin C; we need the gamut of antioxidants provided by a varied whole foods diet to keep the reactive oxygen species like free radicals "in check," thus minimizing the damage they can cause.

Effects of UNREFINED Foods Antioxidants are like the special forces of the body. They seek out free radicals and bind to them causing it to neutralize so they cannot harm the body anymore; they also attempt to repair damages done by oxidants.

Effects of UNREFINED Foods During this process, antioxidants become oxidants, so it is important to constantly replenish these nutrients.

Effects of UNREFINED Foods Different antioxidants do different things, this is why it is important to maintain a balanced diet. Antioxidants that come from foods containing beta carotene and vitamins C and E break free radical chains while antioxidant enzymes reduce the rate of chains or prevent them from beginning.
