Prime vs. Composite Number Prime Number  A whole number greater than 1 that can only be divided evenly by 1 and itself. Composite Number  A whole number greater than 1 that can be divided evenly by other numbers in addition to 1 and itself. Why is 1 not prime or composite?

Area Method: Puppy Fence Problem  Mrs. Smith has 2 puppies, and she wants to create 2 different fenced in areas for both. She wants one fenced in area to have an area of 12 ft 2 and the other to have an area of 11 ft 2. She would like to know how many different layouts she can create to have exactly 12 and 11 ft 2.
