How & Why We Annotate

Annotations can include:  Marginalia (marginal notes)  Highlighting  Underlining  Or any other marks we make, like using Post-it notes or Washi tape to flag a passage or quote How do we annotate?

For Example:

Too much of a good thing…

Annotations are notes we make in a text to help us understand what we are reading We annotate a text in order to draw attention to various elements, such as:  Figurative language  Symbolism  Themes  Repetition  Characterization  Foreshadowing  Memorable Quotes What is “annotation”?

For example….  Figurative language: “Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages.”  Symbolism: “Although there was evening brightness showing through the windows of the bunkhouse, inside it was dark.”  Repetition: Lennie’s strength mentioned 4 times (pg.39-43)  Characterization: “He can’t think of nothing to do, but he sure can take orders.”  Foreshadowing: “Trouble with mice is you always kill ’em”

Let’s look at some examples…

Annotations can include:  Marginalia (marginal notes)  Highlighting  Underlining  Or any other marks we make, like using Post-it notes or Washi tape to flag a passage or quote Let’s give it a try  We annotate a text in order to draw attention to various elements, such as:  Figurative language  Symbolism  Themes  Repetition  Characterization  Foreshadowing  Memorable Quotes
