Finding Perimeters and Areas of a Rectangle.
Amy and Ben Amy and Ben wanted to build a back yard pen for their new puppy. After measuring the yard, they drew a picture showing the shape and size of the pen.
Ben asked, how will we know how much fencing to buy at the store? Amy who was older and wiser replied “ We have to add up the lengths of all four sides of our rectangle. The sum of all sides is called the perimeter. Amy wrote: Perimeter = Do you know how much fencing Amy and Ben will need? 28.
Now lets find the area of the square Amy said. Ben asked area? What is an area? Amy respond very promptly the area of a shape tells you how much space the shape holds. In order to find this out we simply multiply the length of the rectangle by its width.
Amy asked so what is the area of the square? My answer is said Ben 128 square feet. When you multiply 8 feet x 16 feet. The answer is 128. That is correct Ben, now lets go to the Harvey's Hardware to buy supplies Amy said excitingly.

The Answers are: The Perimeter of the rectangle Length 14 feet Width 6 feet = 2(L+W) = 2(14 + 6) = 2(20) = 40 feet. Area of rectangle =Length x Width = L x W =14x 6 = 84 Square feet. The Perimeter of the rectangle Length = 42 Width = 12 = 2(L+W) = 2(42+12) = 2(54) = 108 units Area of a rectangle = Length x Width = L x W = 42 x 12 = 504 square unit.
