Changes in Matter Benchmarks SC.2.P.9.1 – Investigate that materials can be altered to change some of their properties, but not all materials respond the same way to any one alteration. SC.2.N.1.1 Raise questions about the natural world, investigate them in teams through free exploration and systematic observations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations. SC.2.N.1.2 Compare the observations made by different groups using the same tools. Department of Mathematics and Science Look at a sheet of paper. What are its physical properties? It’s white. It’s flat. It feels smooth. It’s shape is a rectangular prism. It’s made from trees. Think of a way to change it. What are some ways? FoldingBending Tearing Cutting Crumpling Try one way. Reflection: 1. What did you do to change the paper? 2. Describe how your paper is different from the flat piece of paper you started with. 3. Describe how your paper is same as the flat piece of paper you started with. All Matter has Properties, but Matter also undergoes Changes

Changes in Matter Is it still paper? What was changed? It’s shape or size or maybe its texture. These are physical properties that describe how an object looks or feels. Yes, the paper changed in how it looks, but what it is made out of did not change. It is still paper made from trees. These changes are called physical changes. A physical change is a change in the physical properties of matter. The matter changed in how it looks, but what it is made out of does not change. Division of Academics - Department of Science

Changes in Matter Let’s discuss how the physical changes in the pictures. Now let’s do the fun-damental Things That Change, Physical Changes to learn more about changes in matter.Things That Change What did you learn? Properties of matter can be physical and describe how an object looks or feels. In a physical change, the object is changed, but not what the object is made out of. Division of Academics - Department of Science

More on Changing MatterChanging Matter What is happened to the ice cubes? They’re melting. Why? If you add enough heat energy to ice, it turns into liquid water, then it turns into a gas called water vapor. If you cool the substance, by taking away heat energy, you can reverse these changes. You can change a gas into a liquid and a liquid into a solid. What type of change is this? Changing from one state to another state is an example of a physical change.

Department of Mathematics and Science How does heat affect physical changes? A change in temperature can change materials. Some types of matter change state when enough heat is added to it - melting it. Some change when heat is taken away from it – freezing it. What are some examples of each?

Let’s Think!! What are some physical changes we could make to these objects? Paper Sponge ClayFabric Ice cubes Clothes Division of Academics - Department of Science

What are some examples of Physical Changes? tearing cutting bending crushing melting freezing Division of Academics - Department of Science

Types of Physical ChangesPhysical Changes Physical changes can happen when matter is… 1.Look at the pictures on the next slide. 2.Number your paper Write the type of physical change you think is taking place. cut/ tornbentcrushedcrumbledrolled foldedsqueezed Changing temperature (hot to cold cold to hot) meltingfreezing Division of Academics - Department of Science

Identify the type of Physical Change Division of Academics - Department of Science

Reflection 1. What are some of the ways that you can change materials? Answer: You can change materials with temperature, or by cutting, ripping, smashing, scrunching, crushing, etc. 2. How can temperature change water? Answer: Temperature changes can change the state of matter (cold makes water solid ice; heat turns solid ice into liquid water).
