Prussia: Army and Bureaucracy Fredrick William I and Fredrick II made Prussia a major European power in the 18 th century. Their major concern was the army (4 th largest in Europe. Fredrick II abolished the use of torture except in treason and murder cases. Granted free speech, press, and religion.Kept Prussian serfdom.

The Austrian Empire Austrian empire was difficult to rule because of different nationalities and languages. Empress Maria Theresa (1740) worked to centralized power within the empire. She was opposed to philosophe reforms, but worked to help the conditions of the serfs. Her son Joseph II believed heavily in philosophe reform.

Russia under Catherine the Great Catherine II or Catherine the Great ruled from Catherine was open to enlightenment ideas. Catherine’s policies only benefited the nobles and serfdom was expanded throughout Russia. She was successful in expanding the Russian Empire southward to the Black Sea by defeating the Turks.

The Seven Years War In 1756 new alliances formed.France allied itself with Austria and Russia.Great Britain and Prussia became allies.This war would take place on 3 fronts. Europe India North America

War in North America Also known as the French and Indian War.France made an alliance with Native Americans. Great Britain put little resources into the European theater of this war. The British won a series of victories in Montreal, the Great Lakes, and Ohio River Valley.

The Treaty of Paris The Treaty of Paris of 1763 ended the War.The French gave up all their holdings in North America. The British took the lands in Canada and East of the Mississippi River. The Spanish took the Louisiana territory from France as payment for help in the War. The British was now the supreme Colonial Empire in the world.
