Unit 5-1: Work and Power. Work When we were looking at force, we observed that an objects motion is related to how the force acts and how long it acts.
Notes - Energy A. Work and Energy. What is Energy?  Energy is the ability to produce change in an object or its environment.  Examples of forms of energy:
Work and Energy. Outcomes Upon completion of this unit you will be able to: Analyze force problems in terms of energy. Define the term "work" as it relates.
Notes on Chapter 8 Work & Energy
Tuesday, September 29, 2009 In olden days, something was only considered “doing work” if you were getting tired or sweaty doing it. Make up a definition.
Work and Power Work is the transfer of energy that results from applying a force over a distance –if nothing moves, no work was done unit of measurement.
Key Concepts  When is work done on an object?  How do you determine the work done on an object?  What is power? Key Terms  Work  Joule  power.
Power! We’ve talked about “work”, now let’s talk about “power”
Work and Power. Work: In physics we say that work is done on an object if a force is applied to it and that force causes it to move a certain distance.
Formative Assessment. 1. If a heater is 78.0% efficient, how much fuel energy would it consume to provide 120. J of useful heat? How much useful heat.
What is Energy? Physics Definition: The ability to do work
2 The Watt is the SI unit of Electrical Power. It is the “work done” by electricity, and is a value of work generated by 1 Amp flowing at a voltage of.

Chapter 6.1 Notes Power. The time it takes to complete an activity is as important as the work required. Compare running up stairs to walking up stairs.
Work and Power. Work Work is the product of force and distance. Work is done when a force acts on an object in the direction the object moves. Work is.
Work and Power. WORK We now know that forces transfer energy. This process of energy transfer is called WORK. Work measures the effects of a force acting.

POWER The rate at which work is done The rate at which work is done The amount of work done in a unit of time The amount of work done in a unit of time.
Power. Rate of Energy Transfer  Power is a quantity that measures the rate at which work is done or energy is transformed. P = W / ∆t power = work ÷

+ Work and Power Chapter Definitions Energy: the ability to produce a change on an object or its environment Work: the process of changing energy.
Work  Work occurs when: 1.An object moves when a force is applied 2.The direction of the objects motion is the same as the direction of the force Formula:

power: the rate at which… –WORK IS DONE –ENERGY IS PRODUCED OR CONSUMED –unit: WATT Definitions Equation

A power plant produces 300 mega joules of energy in 30 seconds. What is the power output of the plant? This means that the plant provides its customers with 10 million joules of energy every second (Enough to keep standard light bulbs continuously lit) Example #1 – Power Plant P = W / t P = 300 x 10 6 J / 30 s P = 1 x 10 7 W (or 10 MW)

A team of dogs pulls a sled with an average force of 3000 newtons across a distance of 200 meters in 75 seconds. What is their power output during this time? P = Fd / t P = (3000 N)(200 m) / 75 s P = 8000 W (or 8 kW) Example #2 – Dog Sled

A motor pulls an 8000 newton elevator upward at an average speed of 3.0 meters per second. What amount of power is used by the motor? Pull the cars up at a slower speed or Use lighter elevator cars. P = Fv ̄ P = (8000 N)(3 m/s) P = 24,000 W How can the demand for power from the motor be reduced? Example #3 – Elevator Motor
