General Questions 8

Unit 4: Organizing What is meant by Organizing (POLC)? 9

Unit 4: Delegation defined The act of getting someone to take on part of your responsibility and giving him/her sufficient authority to do that work. As Bateman & Snell stated (2012), “…the assignment of authority and responsibility to a subordinate at a lower level…getting work done through others.” (Bateman & Snell, Chapter 6, p. 126.) 10

Unit 4: Delegation Why do you feel delegation is important? 11

Unit 4:Delegation “Lack of delegation skills is the number one reason why managers fail.” (Bateman & Snell, Unit 4: AB140.) You can always find someone to whom you can delegate. There are a number of reasons why people have trouble delegating. What is the most common reason people might give for NOT delegating? 12

Unit 4 Delegation Why and under what circumstances will you take an assignment from a coworker? 13

Unit 4 Delegation Delegating is a critical career skill and must be done properly. Know when to accept, when to reject, and when to negotiate. What are some steps in a good delegation? 14

Unit 4:Delegation Objective: Pairing common items that are usually associated with each other to form class teams. Teamwork to become more cohesive at work/school… Do you have the name I sent you via ? Find your team-partner. We will have a team exercise later in Seminar. 15

Famous quote… “If you’re so good that you can’t be replaced, you can’t very well be promoted, either.” (Anonymous/Unknown author.) 16

Organizing (POLC) The number of people under a manager is called what? _ _ _ _ _ _ C _ _ _ _ _ L 17

Unit 4: Levels of Authority (Vertical Structure) Identify some levels of authority in an organization (name at least three). 18

Unit 4: Horizontal Structure How could you organize this class into a conventional organizational chart? 19

Unit 4: Centralized vs. decentralized Which one makes important decisions at the top? More explanation can be found on page

Unit 4: Differentiation vs. Integration Closely related. Which one creates specialized jobs and has many subunits and many specialists? Defined on page

Unit 4: Brainstorming 22 Our textbook authors define brainstorming as (2012), “Process in which group members generate as many ideas about a problem as they can; criticism is withheld until all ideas have been proposed. (Bateman & Snell. (2012). Management. Page 98). Case study—Does anyone have a management or leadership problem they would like to discuss as a whole class?

Current events Does anyone have anything they would like to share with the class on business current events? 23

Unit 4: Game Objective: to describe objects using only adjectives. Teamwork/delegation. 24

Any General Questions? Seminar is coming to an end, soon. Let’s wrap-up the evening. 25
