P UNS Puns fall under the figurative language category. So what is figurative language? It is language that you have to “figure out” As you can see, there are a lot of types of figurative language. Today, we only discuss the pun.

WHAT IS A PUN?  A pun is a play on words.  These words will have two possible meanings.  Puns are usually funny.  You find them everywhere. (movies, poems, plays, etc.) FYI: Shakespeare is known for his puns  In order for one to understand puns, one must have a decent knowledge of vocabulary and culture.

P URPOSE Purpose Puns are generally a source of humor, but they can also be cruel or unkind. Simply put, puns are fun to watch and hear. It is entertaining to see and hear such verbal sparring “Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man.” Mercutio Richard III Act III, scene i : lines 97 – 98
