THE BOTHNIAN BAY – LOCATION The Bothnian Bay The Baltic Sea

THE BOTHNIAN BAY - PROBLEMS Sensitive sea area low water temperature brackish water low number of species simple food webs Environmental management and monitoring shared by two countries Environmental data and information scattered and poorly accessible Environmental problems signs of eutrophication metals in sediment high dioxin levels in fish reproduction problems

A NEED FOR … Overview on the state of the Bothnian Bay and factors affecting it Identification of main environmental problems (international / national / regional / local) and lack of knowledge Tools and guidelines for harmonized management and monitoring aiding also in the implementation of WFD

Environmental Information Database BAT Information Exchange System Water Quality and Ecosystem Model Bothnian Bay Action Plan INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR THE BOTHNIAN BAY Bothnian Bay Life

ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION DATABASE water quality point loading material transport eutrophication metal loading Processed data on Parametres describing

BAT – INFORMATION EXCHANGE SYSTEM Common platform for sharing BAT –related information countries / regions / industries / authorities BAT database; six metal industry plants BAT -issues processes, loads, permits environmental protection measures Experiences of the usability of this kind of platform – needs to develop further? BAT = Best Available Technology

WATER QUALITY AND ECOSYSTEM MODEL WATER QUALITY AND ECOSYSTEM MODEL Free of charge tool for expert use in management purposes in the area Three ”hot spot” modelling areas along the coast Piteå: leakage of sewage – concentration fields in June and September

THE BOTHNIAN BAY ACTION PLAN Analysis of main environmental problems and lack of knowledge Guidelines for integrated status assessment and monitoring Targets and priorities towards sustainable development

THE BOTHNIAN BAY - RBDs Coastal areas - 5 RBDs -Finnish side: 3+1 -Swedish side: 1 Four authorities in charge of WFD implementation & reporting Cooperation between the authorities

Bothnian Bay is a sensitive, lakelike system with restricted water exchange with southern basins of the Baltic Sea Open sea is not included in WFD / coastal areas shared between five RBD’s Also overview on the state of the sea important in the future: Harmonizing ! Cooperation !

It has been calculated that in 2500 years the Bothnian Bay will be a large lake due to land uplift that started after the ice age

Thank you!
