Lesson 1 :Business Connections Ex.3 Overview Understanding Operating Systems

What is a Operating System? Oversees and controls everything that happens while the computer is on. Pass data to and from memory and the peripheral devices Run programs Maintain the filing system on your storage devices Display the “user interface”-the way in which the user interacts with the computer

The Evolution of Operating Systems Unix System-becoming familiar with the computer: Multitasking, Secure, Multiprocessing, File management, and Client/server networking A system that used programs to operate the computer, this system loss it’s popularity due to restricted guidelines and was not a single- standardized operating system. Although, this system is still expanding in popularity

Operations of Pc’s Xerox PARC Research- first computer that didn’t use commands and was based on graphical user interface Current: Microsoft Windows-(in 1995) also user of (GUI) and an improvement of the earlier systems: increased memory, larger storage devices, and higher resolution monitors

Future OS Linux- a powerful OS based on Unix, which the fastest growing OS for the Intel-based PCs. These future OS may include: Natural language Speaking commands Improved intelligence technology (*individual preferences and needs)

Ex.4 Overview/ Work with Utility programs What is a Utility program? The other part of the system software, perform ‘behind the scenes” duties that are important but not essential to the basic operation of the system

File management Utility programs Cleaners Error checking Defragmentation File compression Backup

Accessibility Utility programs Screen reader Onscreen keyboard Speech recognition Screen magnifier

Communication and entertainment (UP) Remote control Small office, home office (SOHO) network setup Internet setup Sound recorder Audio/video file players

Security (UP) File wiping Antivirus Data encryption Firewall

Vocabulary Operating system (OS) The software program that oversees and controls everything that happens while a computer is turned on, such as running the application software, managing the hardware, and maintaining file storage. Output device A part of the computer system that displays information to the user, such as a monitor or a printer. Platform The combination of hardware and operating system that defines the types of programs and devices your computer will support. Professional workstation A computer system smaller than a minicomputer but more powerful than most personal computers. Random access memory (RAM) A computer's primary working memory that temporarily stores information while the computer is turned on. The central processing unit (CPU) works with information stored in RAM. Read-only memory (ROM) The part of a computer's primary storage that permanently stores information, even when the computer is turned off. Supercomputer A computer that is faster and more powerful than a mainframe. Supercomputers are used by large research facilities or government agencies needing a lot of processing ability. Syntax The structure for entering functions and commands, including spelling, punctuation, and acceptable keywords. System software The software necessary to operate and maintain a computer system, including operating systems and utility programs. System unit The case that holds the main, internal circuitry of a computer including the motherboard, disk drives, and power supply. User interface The visual portion of the operating system software that determines the manner in which users interact with the computer. Utility program A program that assists the user in maintaining and improving the operating system. Some utility programs are supplied by the operating system while others are sold by third-party vendors. Virus A program designed as a prank that replicates itself from one computer to another. Windows The common name of the family of operating systems with graphical user interfaces, manufactured by Microsoft Corp.
