 Born: June 25, 1903  Died: January 21, 1950  He was born in Motihari, India  George grew up in a poor family and at the age of 11 he started gaining literary success. His parents didn’t have enough money for an University so Orwell joined the Imperial police force in He soon moved to Spain and joined the Spanish Civil war. Orwell was badly injured and eventually diagnosed with tuberculosis. To support himself he took on many types of work.

 Imperialism is Evil: In “Shooting an Elephant,” the narrator acts against his own conscience to save face for himself and his fellow imperialists.

 A British officer in Moulmein in Lower Burma is pressed by the hatred of imperialism of the community. When a normally tame elephant demolishes a hut, kills a cow, and eats the produce in fruit stalls the narrator has to make the terrible decision of what to do with this “rampaging animal”.

 The Narrator  The Coolie who was killed by the elephant  Burmese sub inspector  Indian Constables  The person who provided the man the gun  Mahout  The Townspeople

 He really wants to uphold his self image up and conscience by not shooting the elephant, but if he doesn't shoot the elephant he will made out to be a fool by the towns people.

 The man shot the elephant. The people of the town stripped the elephant to the bone leaving nothing behind. Though he was proud of what he did at the time, the narrator felt guilty of what he had done after all.

 “I often wondered whether any of the others grasped that I had done it solely to avoid looking a fool.”

After Orwell's death in 1950, the essay was republished several times, including in Shooting an Elephant and Other Essays (1950), Inside the Whale and Other Essays (1957), and Selected Writings (1958).

Did the townspeople actually feel hatred towards the narrator? Did the narrator ever think that getting the rifle would effect what would happen after that? What did the townspeople do with the remains of the elephant?
