Compound Sentences There are two types of sentences; simple sentences and compound sentences. Simple sentences have a subject and a predicate and express a complete thought. Compound sentences are two simple sentences that are joined together by a comma and a connecting words like and, or, or but.

Combining Simple Sentences Jo is a scientist. She travels often. –Jo is a scientist, and she often travels. Will you go to Peru? Will you do more research? –Will you go to Peru, or will you do more research? Prehistoric people had no alphabet. They drew signs. –Prehistoric people had no alphabet, but they drew signs.

Compound Sentences Do not confuse a compound sentence with a simple sentence that has a compound subject or a compound predicate. –Simple sentences: Ann and I do research. We write reports and read them aloud. She and I study and work together. –Compound sentences: Ann types the report, and I proofread it.

Examples Ancient people in Peru made long lines, and they drew huge pictures of animals. Oversized images were drawn, but they are a mystery. Some lines are forty miles long, and some pictures are the size of two football fields. Dirt, rocks, and stones were cleared from a dark layer of earth. A sandy layer showed up clearly, and it still shows today. Pg 53: 6-10
