Learning outcomes The following slides show the topics, pages and learning objectives that your presentation and handouts must achieve. It is really important that you do this!

The causes of cancer p70-71 (a)outline the factors that may increase the risk of developing cancers, with reference to types of radiation, carcinogens, ageing, viruses and heredity; (b) evaluate the epidemiological evidence linking smoking with lung cancer; diet with bowel cancer and mutations in the BRCA1 gene with breast cancer (HSW7b, 7c);

Detecting lung and breast cancer p72-73 (c) outline the methods of detecting cancers of the breast and lungs, with reference to MRI, X- rays, mammography, thermography, CT scans, ultrasound and PET scans;

Breast cancer p (d) define the term prevalence, with reference to breast cancer in post-menopausal women compared with the rest of the female population; (e) outline methods used to treat cancers of the breast, with reference to Tamoxifen ™, surgery(lumpectomy and mastectomy, removal of lymph nodes), chemotherapy, immunotherapy and complementary therapies (HSW6a, 6b, 7b, 7c);

Clinical trials p (f) describe how clinical trials may be used to establish the value of a cancer treatment, with reference to the need for ‘blind’ or ‘double blind’ trials, randomisation and the use of placebos (HSW6b, 7b); (g) discuss the social, ethical and economic consequences of both the development and use of cancer treatments.

Presentation guidance You will be asked to present your work to the other group and teach them what you have learned. You have a double period to prepare your work (Tuesday 10 th February). You will present your work to the other group on Wednesday 11 th February. Your presentation can be in the form of a poster or PowerPoint. DO NOT copy information out of the textbook word for word - This is plagiarism. You will be asked to start your presentation again. This is a formal presentation – appropriate spelling and grammar are essential. Be aware that your presentation needs to enable others to successfully answer the specification points and answer examination questions that relate to them.
