Food of non animal origin (FNAO) is defined as any product intended for human consumption which does not contain any ingredient derived from animals or animal products. Most imported food not of animal origin is not subject to routine checks at the point of entry into the EU

There is requirement that all such imports must comply with EU law and that risk targeted checks are in place (EC) No 882/2004

Certain FNAO, where there are known or emerging health risks are subject to enhanced import controls These products can only lawfully enter via specific ports or airports that are approved to received them.

Arrival of these products must be pre-notified by the importer or their representative to the DPE via completion of a Common Entry Document (Part1) submitted on TRACES and also submission of the original paperwork such a health certificates and analyst’s reports. Documentary Check required on 100% of high risk foods and the % required for physical checks and sampling is specified in legislation. If checks are satisfactory, then Part II is completed on TRACES by an authorised officer and the goods released for free circulation.
