The Cardiovascular System A closed system of the heart and blood vessels The heart pumps blood Blood vessels allow blood to circulate to all parts of the body The cardiovascular system delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells and removes carbon dioxide and other waste products
The Heart Location: Bony thorax between the lungs Pointed apex directed toward left hip About the size of your fist Heart is covered by a double membrane called the Pericardium Serous fluid fills the space between the layers of pericardium to prevent friction when heart contracts

The Heart Heart valves open and close as blood pumps through. Valves prevent backflow of blood. Valves are held in place by chordae tendineae (“heart strings”) Heart muscle cells contract, without nerve impulses, in a regular, continuous way through electrical impulses – Sinoatrial node Pacemaker Atrioventricular node
