EVALUATON OF A CAPACITY BUILDING TRAINING OF TRAINERS PROGRAMME FOR TRAINERS OF LAY HEALTH WORKERS IN UGANDA DR. NUHU YAQUB JR MIPH LSTM 27 TH JUNE 2011

BACKGROUD/RATIONALE Inadequate human resources for health 1.4/1000 (WHO, 2010) The HSSP has made PHC the major strategy for delivering Health Care VHT/CHW are the cornerstone of this initiative The UCBHCA established a capacity building TOT programme in 1992, and subsequently revamped it 2000.

Background/Rationale (contd.) Figure 1: A framework for the capacity TOT program, showing the linkages and anticipated outcomes at the community level. (Based on the UCBHCA TOT framework, 2010)

Background/Rationale (contd.) Programme covers a number of health topics Little evaluation on the effectiveness of this kind of cascade like interventions has been done. This research therefore seeks to factors surrounding the TOT course.

RESEARCH AIM To evaluate a capacity building training of trainers programme for trainers of village health teams/community health workers in Uganda

OBJECTIVES To describe the capacity building training of trainers programme curriculum content and anticipated outcomes for the UCBHCA Explore the views of beneficiaries (i.e. trainers) on the capacity building training of trainers programme To assess the impact the capacity building program has had on beneficiaries (i.e. trainers) training activities.

METHODOLOGY STUDY DESIGN This was a field based study using qualitative research methods STUDY LOCATION This study was carried out at field sites of partner NGOs with the UCBHCA in Kampala, Jinja, Mukono, Buikwe, Masaka and Kibaale

Methodology (contd.) SAMPLING STRATEGY A purposive sampling technique was used, Criteria for participation: i. Participated in the training after 2000 ii. Current involvement in training of CHWs/VHT iii. Gender Study Participants i. Beneficiaries of the programme ii. National Facilitators A total of 80 individuals had benefited since 2000 according to the records, of these we were able to locate 26 individuals

Methodology (contd.) Sample size: 20 (Was determined using saturation point) DATA COLLECTION TOOLS i. In-depth Interviews using topic guides ii. Observations of participants at field sites and assessing using a an observation criteria

DATA ANALYSIS/PRELIMINARY FINDINGS Data analysis was done using the thematic framework approach. Findings /Key Results : The reaction of most participants to the training of trainers (TOT) program was positive. The specific features of the training which they felt improved learning were the use of adult facilitation methods and a curriculum which they felt was appropriate for them. They also assessed the facilitators as one of the factors that made their learning experience good. The trainers also reported the positive impact on their training activities arising from the knowledge and skills gained at the training. On the other hand the trainers identified some extraneous factors outside of the TOT which affected their effectiveness in the community.

Conclusion Conclusion Conclusion The Findings of this study suggest that the UCBHCA capacity building training of trainers program is effective in providing the training for the trainers of the CHWs and VHTs. The trainers have the potential of playing a key role in health delivery in their communities as their roles of training community health workers in the health service sector which has been expanded, through provision of quality training to non-professional health workers like CHWs/VHTs who reach all people in their communities and homes through house to house visit to give advice to mothers to improve their quality of health and their families and referral of mothers and children for further management to the nearest health facility as deemed necessary for treatment/managment.
