Warm-up Today is day 21 (October 2 nd, Wed) You need two sheets of loose leaf paper for this lesson What is love? Love is ……. What analogies or metaphor(s) can you imagine? Why did you choose these? You may have limited experience with love, so think about sayings/proverbs/lyrics you have heard about the subject….

Sonnets A sonnet is a popular form of poetry. A sonnet has 14 lines and usually (but not always) relates to love In English class, we focus our attention on the English sonnet; it is also called the Shakespearean sonnet.

Sonnets An English sonnet is divided into three quatrains and one couplet. A quatrain is a group of 4 lines, while a couplet is = 14 Abab cdcd efef gg.

Sonnets Meter is a repeated pattern of rhythm. There are many classifications of meter, but for our purposes now, you need to know the term iambic pentameter. An iamb is a pair of syllables. The first one is unstressed and the second one is stressed. Penta means 5, so 5 pairs = 10 total syllables.

Sonnets A sonnet usually contains three sections. Introduce a situation/problem/question Turning point Solution/resolution/answer

Pairwork You are going to receive a worksheet containing the 14 lines of “Sonnet 18” out of order. You must read the lines and re-arrange them so that they are in order. Both partners must agree before moving a strip of paper, and you should both move them together. Each person is responsible for completing their own worksheet. Remember, the pattern should be three abab quatrains, and then a rhyming couplet.

“Sonnet 130” Another one of the most popular Shakespearean sonnets is #130. You will read “Sonnet 130” in PIG formation and complete the provided analysis questions. Each student is responsible for completing their own answer sheet. Each student is responsible for completing task #2 for one quatrain and sharing with your group. Each student is responsible for finding one original example for tasks #3 and #4 and sharing it with your group. Questions 8 and 9 should be answered individually.

Sonnet XXX We will re-read this 20 th century sonnet in the textbook. (pp 814)
