MODULE 1 – THE LAW OF WAR + REPORTING On completion of this module, participants will understand that the aim of the course is to introduce the law applicable in situations of armed violence to media professionals.

MODULE 2 – HUMANITARIAN LAW On completion of this module, participants will be able to take into account humanitarian law to inform their reporting and to describe what they are witnessing. MORE PARTICULARLY, PARTICIPANTS WILL: - understand what humanitarian law is and when it applies (EXTRA: understand what human rights law is and when it applies) - know who/what and how is protected by humanitarian law - learn the main principles and basic rules of humanitarian law and their respective sources (EXTRA: learn related human rights law regarding armed violence and their respective sources)

MODULE 3 – CRIMES AND JUSTICE On completion of this module, participants will understand how it may be useful, in their role of raising public awareness and witnesses, to know more about certain international crimes, criminal responsibility and justice mechanisms when reporting on armed conflicts and other situations of violence. MORE PARTICULARLY, PARTICIPANTS WILL - know about the similarities and differences between war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide - understand more about criminal responsibility and courts - learn about the functioning of enforcement mechanisms and the role media professionals can play in them

MODULE 4 – SAFETY OF MEDIA On completion of this module, participants will understand how the law protects their safety and will know more about those organizations that may help in dangerous missions. MORE PARTICULARLY, PARTICIPANTS WILL - know how the law addresses the different risks they are facing when reporting on armed conflicts - understand the limits of their protection as civilians - receive practical information on the work of organizations that can be helpful for journalists in trouble

MODULE 5 – HUMANITARIAN ACTION AND MEDIA On completion of this module, participants will understand more about the functioning of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and will be able to interact more efficiently with humanitarian actors. MORE PARTICULARLY, PARTICIPANTS WILL - understand the structure, the functioning, the working principles and modes of action of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and its components - discover the media's role played in advancing neutral an independent humanitarian action - learn about efficient ways of communicating with humanitarian actors
