Review “The Giving Tree”, “A Cup of Tea”, and “The Duchess and the Jeweller.”

Example Quote #1: “[H]e would look down at his legs, so shapely in their perfect trousers; at his boots; at his spats…But he dismantled himself often and became again a little boy in a dark alley” (1048). Interpretation: As Oliver reviews himself, he recognizes that his life is a complex juxtaposition—on the outside he is rich, successful, impeccably well- dressed while on the inside he is still a ragged, conniving, impoverished little hustler who will do almost anything to make a buck. As a little boy, he wants to enjoy a wealthy lifestyle. As an adult, he has that lifestyle, but cannot break out of his “little boy hustler” thinking. Oliver now is one of the rich elite (the haves) but often still thinks of himself as a poor little boy (the have-nots).
