SUDS/ Planning workshop A tool to evaluate integrated amenity and storm water indicates of SUDS Rohit Singh Research Supervisors: Prof. Chris Jefferies Dr. Rebecca Wade

The Tool This research aims to develop a tool for integrated planning evaluation of SUDS amenity and storm water management aspects. The tool has two themes: 1.Amenity 2.Storm water management A number of indicators are associated with each theme A score of 1-3 will be used to assess the value of each indicator

Calaismuirwood Pond, England London wetland Detention basin in Scotland Multi-purpose detention basin Redfern Park, Australia Bioretention in AustraliaSwale, Dundee SUDS Examples

Themes and Indicators Amenity IndicatorsStorm water quantity indicators 1 Access (roads, footpaths nearby)Levels of attenuation (2yr storage-1level, 2 yr and 10 yr-2 levels, 2 yr,10yr and 30 yr storage- 3levels) 2 Water visibility (visible water on surface example. pond) Attenuation storage (limits runoff similar to greenfield) 3 Aesthetics (associated scenic beauty) Interception volume (storage from leaves, grasses and trees) 4 Passive security ( houses, schools, roads etc nearby) Long term storage (infiltration storage in soil) 5 Multi-use (play, storage, biodiversity) Peak Flow (max. flow in receiving water) 6 Safety (risk of drowning) 7 Ownership ( whether public, institutional, private)

Weightings Please discuss and score the relative importance of each theme associated with SUDS (sustainable urban drainage such as ponds, basins, ditches) planning. ThemeWeightComments Amenity Storm water management
