Conclusions of the project Only known investigation of interoperability between physical and virtual catalogues First project to investigate user behaviour through observation then focus groups rather than questionnaires Key findings follow

System performance Various Z39.50 configurations permit technical interoperability but only limited semantic interoperability Different cataloguing and indexing practices impair semantic interoperability We recommend extension of Bath Profile work and analysis and modelling of indexing attributes

Dynamic landscaping and CLDs Clumps can be single targets in larger hyper-clumps Collection description databases can be output in formats that other UK users of CLDs can harvest and use We recommend development of a hyper- clump of current virtual union catalogues to test this finding further

Searching a distributed virtual catalogue via Z39.50 Use of Z to Z middleware (JAFER) permits a clump to be searched from another clump, a COPAC, or an individual Z client A user can select all/subset of available end destination Z servers (known as “landscaping”) within JAFER We recommend further development and exploitation of JAFER and testing of Z clumps with other finding tools using new non-Z technologies

Comparing results from clumps and COPAC Most clumps do not bring back complete results sets from Z servers (to save results time for users) COPAC on-the-fly routines could apply to clumps Response times from individual Z servers were surprisingly quick We recommend further testing of COPAC on-the-fly routines in a distributed catalogue Test middleware further

User behaviour Importance to users of availability as well as holdings information Google and Amazon have influenced user expectations Librarians mistrust results from clumps We recommend comparative user case studies and testing of considerable refinement of user choice We need an advocacy campaign with librarians
