Arrival & Dismissal  Students can begin entering the classroom at 8:00am. Everyone should be in the room by 8:30am.  Please do not drop students off or pick them up in the back near the “palace” or in the cul-de-sac behind the palace. We ask this for safety reasons.  Also, please make sure you enter through the doors near the playground after coming through the building.

Handouts & Website Open House handouts and other information may be found on our 2 nd grade website, which you can visit by going to our school’s website ( Look at the second grade section found under grade levels.  Also, please look at our website for the Second Grade Sentinel & other important announcements!

Quick Check  Quick Check is a review and a preview for science, math, and reading vocabulary.  Assessment tool to collect class and grade level data.  Use to drive instruction as we begin to teach units.

Reading  We use a balanced literacy model which includes read alouds, shared reading, guided reading and independent reading.  Teachers hold reading conferences and strategy groups to target individual student needs.  Students build reading stamina at the beginning of the year  There is a lot of emphasis on comprehension in 2 nd grade.  Schema, Predictions, Connections, Mental Images, Inferences, Questioning, Synthesizing, Summarize  By the end of the year, students should be reading on a level.

Writing Workshop  We use the writing workshop process  Pre-writing  Drafting  Conferencing  Revising  Editing  Publishing  Writing Rubric  Exemplars

Word Study  An 8 day rotation  Pre- tests, word study, partner test  Words will be found in your child’s agenda  Focus on sound patterns for example: short a, the “ow” sound etc..

Math Curriculum  Math Expressions program  “Math Talk”  Math Journals  We will supplement when necessary!  Mad Minute will be given weekly. Please have your child study their addition and subtraction facts nightly. For example 7+6, 10+9

Science & Social Studies  4 big topics this year in Science…  Sound  States of Matter  Weather  Life Cycle of Butterflies  Big topics in Social Studies…  Community & Citizens  Geography  Traditions

Homework  20 minutes of reading/writing  Think-Tac-Toe  2 activities a week  10 minutes of math  Math homework will be passed out as needed.  Writing homework will be due every Friday.

Agendas  Students will record events, homework, specials, and minutes read each night  Should be signed nightly  Communicate daily behavior  Two-way communication through notes  Please write absence notes on a separate sheet of paper

Field Trips  We will be going on three field trips this year…  Charlotte’s Web play in November  Marbles Museum in February  ‘Get Buggy’ Science presentation in April  We would love for you to join us at the museum and for our science presentation. Please take a few minutes to complete the Volunteer Registration in the Media Center tonight or in the next few weeks. It takes weeks for your application to process so be proactive!

WOW  Educational opportunities outside daily curriculum  Extensions for students that have mastered a skill and extra support for students to reach mastery  Groups are fluid and change as student’s needs change based on pre/post tests and teacher observations  Math focus
