Objective Classify a number in the real number system.

History of Numbers

The Real Number System Real Numbers Rational Numbers: Can be expressed as a ratio of two integers. Integers: {…-2,-1,0,1,2,…} Whole Numbers: {0,1,2,3,…} Natural Numbers: {1,2,3,…} Irrational Numbers: Cannot be Expressed as a ratio of two integers.

Activity Each pair of students will receive a set of cards that represent the different number systems. I will put up a number and the goal is for each pair to hold up the number systems in which the number belongs. The first five groups with the correct answer will get a point. The group with the most points wins.

Exit Ticket Find a number that is a rational number but not an integer.
