Today is April 29th, 2010 Objective: Students will be able to describe how humans are impacting the environment through pollution.

What is a Watershed? Watch the following video and answer the questions on your guide sheet. Watch the following video about oysters and the bay. Answer the question on your sheet.

What is a Watershed? Any area where water is flowing to a river, stream, bay, estuary, etc.

Algal Blooms Algal Blooms can be caused by too many nutrients (fertilizer) running into the bay The large population of algae can kill entire ecosystems Algae use up oxygen in the water at night Bacteria use oxygen to decompose dead algae

Algal Blooms Watch the following video about algal blooms. Answer the question on your guide sheet.

Acid Rain Watch the following segment about acid rain and answer the question on your sheet.

Acid Rain Pollutants join in the water cycle to create acid rain. Rain is normally quite acidic (pH= 5.6) Water reacting with sulfur oxides or nitrogen oxides creates Acid Rain (pH= 4.6)

Acid Rain Causes pH to decrease in streams, lakes, etc Causes leaves to break down

Smog is a type of air pollution caused by the burning of fossil fuels Smog is made of particulates which are bits of dust, metal, and unburned fuel. Smog is also made of ground level ozone.

Introduced Species Watch the following video about the Kingfisher bird and answer the question on your guide sheet. Watch the video about the cane toad and answer the corresponding question.

Introduced Species Not all introduced species are animals, plants or insects. Some can be bacteria or fungi! Chestnuts Roasting on an open fire... Cryphonectria parasitica
