CONFIDENTIAL1 Good Afternoon! Today we will be learning about Points, lines, segments, rays Let’s warm up : Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit. 1) 24° C2) 37° C Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius. 3) 240° F4) 89° F 3) ° C 4) ° C 1) 75.2 ° F 2) 98.6 ° F

CONFIDENTIAL 2 Let’s start with the topic Points, lines, segments, rays Geometry is all about shapes and their properties. Understanding geometry depends on the understanding of some basic terms that are used to define many other terms. The two most common subjects in geometry are: 1) Plane Geometry 2) Solid Geometry

CONFIDENTIAL 3 Plane geometry: is the study of plane figures in the plane such as points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons... shapes that can be drawn on a piece of paper. A plane exists in two-dimensional, or 2D figures i.e. length and height. A plane is a flat surface with no thickness.

CONFIDENTIAL 4 Solid Geometry: is the study of three dimensional objects like cubes and pyramids. It is called three-dimensional, or 3D because there are three dimensions: width, depth and height.

CONFIDENTIAL 5 Point  A point is an exact location.  Points are dimensionless, i.e., a point has no width, length, or height. We locate points relative to some arbitrary standard point, often called the "origin". A point is a location in space. X

CONFIDENTIAL 6 A line is a group of points on a straight path that extends to infinity. Any two points on the line can be used to name it. This line is called line DE.  Its length, having no limit, is infinite.  It has no width or height. D E DE Line

CONFIDENTIAL 7 A line segment is a part of a line that has two end points. A line segment is the path of shortest distance between two points. The two end points of the line segment are used to name the line segment. This line segment is called segment XY. All the points "between" the two points make up a line segment. A line segment has one dimension, length. It has no width or height. XY XY Line segment

CONFIDENTIAL 8 A ray is part of a line. A ray extends indefinitely in one direction, but ends at a single point in the other direction. That point is called the end-point of the ray. Ray A ray is named starting with its end point first and then any other point on the ray second. OP OP This ray is called ray OP.

CONFIDENTIAL 9  A line has no end-points. NOTE:  A line segment has two end-points.  A ray one end-point.

CONFIDENTIAL 10 What is the difference between a line and a ray? A line goes on to infinity in both directions, but a ray stops on one end. If you cut a line in half, you make two rays. DE ray OD line DE DE ray OE O

CONFIDENTIAL 11 Using the graphic in the figure we see that: A D B C O A, B, C, D and O are points. DB is a line. AC, OC, and OA are line segments. OD and OB are rays.

CONFIDENTIAL X- scale Y- scale Draw a line segment between points (1,5) and (5,5) on the XY-scale. STEP1: Mark the points (1,5) and (5,5) on the XY-scale. X X point (1,5) point (5,5)

CONFIDENTIAL 13 STEP2: Join the points (1,5) and (5,5) on the XY-scale X X Y- scale X- scale

CONFIDENTIAL 14 Draw a ray passing through points (2,1) and (6,3) on the XY-scale X- scale Y- scale X X point (2,1) point (6,3) STEP1: Mark the points (2,1) and (6,3) on the XY-scale.

CONFIDENTIAL 21 Very Good! Let's Review Geometry is all about shapes and their properties.
