Presentation transcript:

1. Science Science is a way of learning about the natural world that provides possible explanations to questions.

2. Physical Science Physics and Chemistry, is the study of matter and energy.

3. Life Science Life Science is the study of living things.

4. Earth Science Earth Science is the study of Earth and Space including processes that occur on Earth and deep within Earth.

5. Observation using one or more of your senses (sight, touch, sound, taste, and smell) to identify or learn about something.

6. Inference a conclusion formed from available information or evidence

7. Description a summary of observations

8. Explanation an interpretation of observations

9. Hypothesis An explanation that can be tested with a scientific investigation.

10. Independent Variable The variable that is changed (manipulated) in an experiment

11. Dependent Variable The variable that is changed (manipulated) in an experiment

12. Controlled Variable a scientific experiment that involves changing one factor and observing its effects on one thing while keeping all other things constant.

13. Control group In a controlled experiment the independent variable is unchanged.

14. Experimental Group In a controlled experiment the independent variable is changed.

15. Scientific method a series of steps that scientists use when performing an experiment.

16. Quantitative Data descriptions of the natural world using numbers

17. Qualitative Data descriptions of the natural world using words

18. model a representation of an object or an event that is used as a tool for understanding the natural world

19. Scientific theory an attempt to explain a pattern observed repeatedly in the natural world. An explanation of why or how an even occurred.

20. Scientific law A rule that describes a pattern in nature. States that an event will occur, does not explain why it happens.

21. Precision How close repeated measurements are to each other.

22. Consistency The ability to repeat a task with little variation.

23. Mean The sum of the numbers in a set of data divided by the number of entries in the set

24. Median The middle number in a data set when the data are arranged in numerical order

25. Mode The number that appears most often

26. Range The difference between the highest and lowest values in a data set

27. Volume the amount of space an object takes up. Graduated Cylinder measures liquids in milliliters (mL). Solids measured in cubic centimeters. (cm 3 )

28. Mass the amount of matter of an object. Measured in grams with a triple beam balance scale.

29. Weight the pull of gravity on an object. Measured in Newtons with a spring scale.

30. Trundle Wheel also a ruler, measures the length of an object.
