Practice: How is King Duncan portrayed in Act I? 1. Answer the question directly: King Duncan is shown to be an honorable and fair man. 2. Commentary: When the traitor is discovered, Duncan immediately gives that honor to Macbeth to reward his efforts as a soldier.

Practice: How is King Duncan portrayed in Act I? (continued) 3. Text: Duncan feels he cannot honor Macbeth enough and admits, “The sin of [his] ingratitude even now/Was heavy on [him],” as he names Macbeth the new Thane of Cawdor. –Note: use brackets to “adjust” the text to make it work for you.
