GETTING TO KNOW THE PERDIODIC TABLE

In the periodic table, each row is called period. –There are 7 periods –You sit in rows in your periods. The elements in each row have the same number of energy shells.

3

Periods Each row is called a “period” The elements in each period have the same number of shells 5 th Period = 5 Shells 6 th Period = 6 Shells 7 th Period = 7 Shells

Each column in the periodic table is called a group/family – They have similar properties, just like family members share characteristics – You like to hang out with people in your family or group… Each of the elements in the same group have the same number of (valence) electrons in their outer shell. The electrons in the outer shell are called valence electrons The group number equals the number of valence electrons.

6

Groups Each column is called a “group” Each element in a group has the same number of electrons in their outer orbital, also known as “shells”. Except for He, it has 2 electrons The electrons in the outer shell are called “ valence electrons”
