Republicans won the presidency & Congress. 1 st time one political party replaced another in power- Peacefully!!!! Put Republican ideas to work in govt. James Madison-Sec. of State Lower defense spending & cut the size of the army and navy.

Taxes and National Bank Wanted to get rid of domestic taxes & close tax collecting agencies. Kept Bank of the United States Republicans expected him to replace Federalists who had govt. jobs He did not want too but he did replace a lot!!

Landmark court case President Adams appointed several last- minute judges. Some had not received their commissions! Jefferson told Madison not to hand them out!! William Marbury demanded that the Supreme Court force Madison to hand over his papers!

The fourth Chief Justice of the United States, John Marshall helped to elevate the status and power of the Supreme Court. President John Adams appointed Marshall to the high Court in He held the office until his death in The most famous case heard by Marshall, perhaps, was the 1803 Marbury v. Madison case, which resulted in the fortification of the Court’s power of judicial review.

John Marshall was chief justice of Supreme Court Marbury said Judiciary Act gave court power to hand over his papers. Marshall said no because he ruled the Judiciary Act was unconstitutional!!! Gave Supreme Court power of judicial review!! Supreme Court could declare an act of Congress unconstitutional-greater power for court.
