The Grapes of Wrath: Background and Inspiration

The Dust Bowl During the Great Depression, a great drought swept over the Great Plains Many people had moved to the Great Plains to farm The drought killed many crops and winds stirred up dirt from the dry land, thus giving it the name the “Dust Bowl”.

With little chance of making a profit, many people abandoned their farms and migrated west The Great Migration led people to “Californy” or California Farmers took up jobs as migrant workers, worker crops for a small profit to pay for shelter and food for their family

The Novel Written in 1939 by John Steinbeck Follows The Joad family and Jim Casey on their migration to California On their trip they meet many families in the same position as they are.
