POSITIVE DISCIPLINE The root word of discipline is disciple. Discipline is training: A. sport skills B. life skills C. self-control D. positive behavior

You cannot win championships consistently without discipline in your program.

NEGATIVE DISCIPLINE The command style coaching lends itself to negative discipline. A. Coach can be mean and nasty by: 1. use of blame, shame, and pain. 2. use of public forum to demean players. 3. instill fear. B. A negative approach can: 1. deny players of a learning opportunity. 2. forces players to quit under the abuse. 3. destroy a person’s self-esteem.

THE IMPACT OF COACHING (P-145)

WHY DO STUDENT-ATHLETES MISBEHAVE? 1. They are discouraged 2. They believe they do not belong and are not significant to the team. 3. They are intending to get revenge. 4. They have quit.

CORRECTING BEHAVIOR 1. Use discipline not punishment. 2. Communicate a change in the behavior. 3. Determine if the negative behavior broke team rules or the law. 4. If the team rules were broken, initiate your consequences and be consistent and fair. 5. If legal or police action is warranted, you are responsible for turning the matter over to appropriate persons.

REFLECTIONS ON DICIPLINE Reflect on the problem you are given as a coach.
