Exploring The 1960s Preparing to read The Watsons Go To Birmingham 1963

Bell Ringer What do you know about the 1960s and Civil Rights? Write that on your sticky note and place it on the “K” poster. Anticipation Guide: When we come back from the Thanksgiving Break, we will begin a novel study. The name of the book is The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. The Anticipation Guide and the other activities of today will help think about issues and vocabulary that will come up in the book. Prejudice & Civil Rights Prejudice is forming an opinion about something based on insufficient information or ignorance. It was prevalent in the past and unfortunately still exist today. Civil Rights Movement is a time period when people, groups, and organizations were working toward creating equality for all.

Lesson Goals This lesson will allow you to explore what you think about topics related to the 1960s. This lesson will allow you to learn more about the author of the book we are about to read. This lesson will allow you to glimpse into the lives of others during the 1960s. What do you want to know about the 1960s and The Civil Rights Movement?

Discuss In groups of 2 -3 people, complete the “Agree/Disagree (Group)”. We will briefly debrief as a class. As we prepare to read The Watsons Go to Birmingham, consider these statements and pay attention to your opinions. Do they stay the same or change? Let’s explore more...
