THREE MAIN STATISTICAL REASONS FOR COMMUNITY LEVEL DATA Analysis of characteristics of communities (e.g. % of communities with agricultural inputs suppliers) Analysis in relation to holding-level data (e.g. number of holdings participating in farmers associations) Checking holding-level data collected in agricultural census (cadastral information)

Community-level data at little cost Community administration is involved in census collection or listing of households or holdings

DEFINING A COMMUNITY a community can be defined as a self-contained unit of social and economic activities (FAO, 1983) Unit chosen for community survey depends on: – Data collected – Cost – Identifying community units – Stability of community units – Census methodology

Community level data items Geography Location, Agro-ecology, topography, soil types, Land use, Area of communal grazing land, Area of communal forest, Travelling time to the urban centre, access to a motorable road, proneness to natural disasters Socio-economic conditions Demographic profile, socio-economic status, and nature of economic activities, whether there are seasonal food shortages Community infrastructure and services Fertilizer/ pesticide dealer, seed dealer, credit institution, irrigation facilities, area equipped for irrigation, processing facilities, agricultural produce market/collection network, farmers associations, extension/veterinary services, health, radio/telephone/internet, public transport etc. Development programmes

Concepts and definitions for community items Area of communal grazing land Area of communal forest Whether the community is prone to natural disasters Area equipped for irrigation Presence of periodic or permanent agricultural produce market Existence of agricultural produce collection network

Tabulation/results concerning for community level data Include intended results concerning community level data in the tabulation plans of the agricultural census
