AVID Mission Statement “AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.”

What is AVID? AVID is an elective class built into the student’s schedule AVID is a 4-year commitment Students must meet certain criteria to join and remain in AVID

Student Expectations Take A-G courses Maintain Cs or better in all classes Maintain satisfactory citizenship and attendance in all classes Attend summer school (if necessary) to meet A-G requirements Take Cornell Notes and maintain an organized notebook Come to school prepared and on time each day Participate in Community Service Participate in Extra Curricular activities

What we do in AVID Ongoing Mentoring ▫Grade Checks ▫AVID teacher tracks students’ completion of the A-G requirements ▫AVID tutors (college students) come to the AVID class and work with our students as tutors and mentors

What do we do in AVID? Tutorials ▫Twice a week ▫AVID Tutors facilitate groups ▫Students work on a point of confusion from one of their academic classes ▫Students become independent learners by working out their problem using higher level questioning

What do we do in AVID? Notebook Checks ▫Once a week ▫Notebook Checks include  3-ring Binder with dividers for each class  Completed Agenda  Organized (no loose papers)  Cornell Notes

What we do in AVID “College Going” Environment ▫Students share a common goal of getting accepted to college ▫The atmosphere in the class is motivating and students encourage each other to strive for their goals ▫College T-shirt Day every Wednesday!

What we do in AVID College Visits ▫9-10 th grade – 1 day trips ▫11 th grade – Junior Trip  Overnight fieldtrip  Usually up to San Fran

What we do in AVID Assistance with the College Application and Financial Aid Process ▫Students are monitored and supported in the college application process ▫Students are given direct support in applying for scholarships and completing the financial aid process

Who should apply? First Generation College Students ▫You and your brothers and sisters will be the first to attend a four-year university and earn a bachelor’s degree in the United States

Who should apply? Students with a 2.0 (C average) or better ▫AVID is not an intervention program for students that are earning Ds and Fs in multiple courses ▫AVID students are motivated and work hard!

Who should apply? Students who want to go to a 4-year university right after high school graduation ▫If your goal is to go to work, military, or community college after high school, AVID is probably not the right program

Who should apply? Students that need extra support in academics and college mentoring Students of all backgrounds
