Remembrance…. Excerpts form interviews with Miss VB’s grandparents.

“I had enlisted on Nov. 3rd, I was in flight school down in San Antonio Texas. We were listening to a professional football game on the radio. I was lying in my bunk. They broke into the radio program and gave a report that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. That is something I will never forget, because that meant we were definitely in the war. They immediately hurried things up. On the 3rd day of July 1942 I received my wings, they really hurried us through. Nine months from the day I enlisted I had my wings, which was unusual. Before that time it took 18 months to get your wings. They really shoved us through in half that time to get us ready.” -Glenn VanBlaricum “I was a telephone operator in Olney, IL, when word came through that we had been attacked. Things changed after that. There were rules and regulations about the telephone operation system. We no longer could go in and out of the building; we had to use a code…. From then on we always observed Dec. 7.” -Mary Ellen VanBlaricum

“The first thing I think about is: you know that was 65 years ago. 65 years ago that happened…. We went to Pearl Harbor. There have only been two places that have really affected me. One was Pearl Harbor and the other was Gettysburg. [Pearl Harbor] changed my life, there is no question about it.” -Glenn VanBlaricum “We went to Hawaii for our anniversary in 1981, we went to a theater in Honolulu that was showing the invasion. It was supposed to be official pictures located after the war - how these ‘Japs’ (that’s what we called them back then) would fly in and bomb all those ships. Of course there were almost all adults in that theater - people just cried openly. It certainly brought me to tears. Just something terrible.” –Mary Ellen VanBlaricum
