Comments on vision domain 10th Washington Group meeting Luxembourg 3-5 November 2010 Andres Montes ESCAP Statistics Division

Overall assessment  The vision questions perform relatively well providing clear and conclusive findings.  This suggests that the current set of extended questions should be adopted with some minor changes to increase the accuracy of the measures.

Main issues  Confusion with ‘glasses’ clause in the first question.  ‘across the room’ – no exact notion about the size of room.  ‘picture on a coin’ – what’s the distance for viewing a coin?

Proposed set 1.Do you wear glasses for seeing? a) No. b) Yes, to see far away. c) Yes, to see up close. d) Other reason. 2.Do you have difficulty seeing [even when wearing glasses]? 3.Do you have difficulty clearly seeing someone’s face across a room [even when wearing glasses]? Give examples? 4.Do you have difficulty clearly seeing the picture on a coin at arms length [even when wearing glasses]? Give examples?
