Common Open Software Environment

Common Desktop Environment History 1 SunSoft, HP, IBM and USL announced CDE in June 1993 as a joint development within the Common Open Software Environment (COSE) initiative

Common Open Software Environment 1 The Common Open Software Environment or COSE was an initiative formed in March 1993 by the major Unix vendors of the time to create open, unified operating system (OS) standards.

Solaris (operating system) - Desktop environments 1 As a member of COSE, the Common Open Software Environment initiative, Sun helped co-develop the Common Desktop Environment

Unix - Standards 1 In the early 1990s, a separate but very similar effort was started by an industry consortium, the Common Open Software Environment (COSE) initiative, which eventually became the Single UNIX Specification administered by The Open Group

Open Software Foundation - Merger 1 In May, the Common Open Software Environment (COSE) initiative was announced by the major players in the UNIX world from both the UI and OSF camps: Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Sun, Unix System Laboratories, and the Santa Cruz Operation

Single UNIX Specification s: Spec In the early 1990s, a separate effort known as the Common API Specification or Spec 1170 was initiated by several major vendors, who formed the Common Open Software Environment|COSE alliance in the wake of the Unix wars

Unix wars - The move towards open source code 1 In March 1993 the major participants in UI and OSF formed the Common Open Software Environment (COSE) alliance, effectively marking the end of the most significant era of the Unix wars. In June, ATT sold its UNIX assets to Novell, and in October Novell transferred the Unix brand to X/Open.

UNIX International 1 In May 1993, the major members of both UI and OSF announced the Common Open Software Environment (COSE) initiative. This was followed by the merging of UI and OSF into a new OSF in March 1994, which in turn merged with X/Open in 1996, forming The Open Group.

Operating systems - Graphical user interfaces 1 Competition among the various vendors of Unix (HP, IBM, Sun) led to much fragmentation, though an effort to standardize in the 1990s to Common Open Software Environment|COSE and Common Desktop Environment|CDE failed for various reasons, and were eventually eclipsed by the widespread adoption of GNOME and K Desktop Environment

The Open Group - History 1 The Common Open Software Environment|COSE initiative in 1993 can be considered to be the first unification step and the merger of the Open Software Foundation (OSF) and X/Open in 1996 as the ultimate step in the end of those skirmishes

Solaris Operating System - Desktop environments 1 As a member of COSE, the Common Open Software Environment initiative, Sun helped co-develop the Common Desktop Environment

OpenWindows - History 1 In 1993, Sun and the other major Unix vendors of the time formed the Common Open Software Environment|COSE alliance, seeking further standardization among their Unix releases. The alliance chose the Motif (software)|Motif look and feel as its standard, and Sun announced it would phase out OpenWindows in favor of the new COSE desktop environment, which came to be known as Common Desktop Environment|CDE.

Common Desktop Environment - History 1 SunSoft, Inc.|SunSoft, Hewlett- Packard|HP, IBM and Unix System Laboratories|USL announced CDE in June 1993 as a joint development within the Common Open Software Environment (COSE) initiative

Santa Cruz Operation - Alliances 1 SCO was also part of 1993's Common Open Software Environment|COSE initiative, a more successful and broadly supported initiative to create an open and unified UNIX standard.

SunView - Bundled productivity applications 1 As part of the Common Open Software Environment|COSE initiative, it was decided that Sun’s bundled applications would be ported yet again, this time to the Motif (software)|Motif widget toolkit, and the result would be part of Common Desktop Environment|CDE

OPEN LOOK - Demise 1 By June 1993, the major UNIX players, including ATT and Sun, had decided that a truly unified Unix was necessary in order to better compete against Microsoft and had formed the Common Open Software Environment (COSE) initiative

UnixWare - Novell (1993–1995) 1 The MOTIF 1.2 runtime libraries were included for Common Open Software Environment|COSE compliance. NUC (NetWare Unix Client) software was included for integration with Novell NetWare servers. The Merge (software)|Advanced Merge application was installed on both the server and personal editions to allow running DOS and Windows 3.1 applications.

History of Unix s 1 The creation of the Common Open Software Environment (COSE) initiative that year, by the major players in Unix, marked the end of the most notorious phase of the Unix wars, and was followed by the merger of UI and OSF in

DECwindows - Early development 1 Hewlett-Packard, IBM, SunSoft, Inc.|SunSoft, and Unix System Laboratories|USL announced CDE in June 1993 as a joint development within the Common Open Software Environment (COSE) initiative. Each development group contributed its own technology to CDE:
