ATLAS MASS TOURISM SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP Mass Tourism is fundamentally a concept that relates to scale and participation rates We get ourselves into dangerous water when we start trying to broaden its meaning to denote certain types of tourist or tourism It has also,wrongly and unfairly, become a term laden with negative value judgements

MASS TOURISM It is also not the opposite of ''niche tourism'' as many so- called niches are on a mass scale or have mass appeal These include,for example: -religious tourism -health tourism -leisure shopping -film and tv induced tourism

MASS TOURISM Mass Tourism is not in decline; it is growing But its nature is changing as a result of factors such as the Internet and the growth of budget airlines It is the failure of the traditional tourism industry to keep up with changes in the market that is creating the illusion that mass tourism is in decline
